It takes a big man to apologise

IT’S never too late to say you are sorry. And it is never too early to laud those who admit their wrongs and make amends.
Plaudits are due to Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein for apologising to Malaysians over his brandishing of the keris, widely seen as one of the causes leading to the Barisan Nasional’s dismal performance in the March 8 general election.
As the Umno Youth leader and Education Minister himself said, it has been a “sad lesson”. In acknowledging that his actions were part of the Barisan’s poor showing, he has enhanced his reputation as someone who is willing to take responsibility and make changes to remedy the situation.
Hishammuddin’s statement of regret would have been more meaningful and would have made more impact if there were no elements of ambivalence in it.
For the record, the minister said he apologised to the non-Malays because of the fear to a symbol that his actions had created, which was not his intention, and to the Malays for not being able to uphold their symbol of heritage.
Nevertheless, it has been a big climb-down for him after having made haughty remarks, like the keris is here to stay, and that he would continue to wield it on a matter of principle until people realised the wavy weapon was not to threaten non-Malays but to motivate Malays.
The apology, despite its qualification, is still commendable because humility is generally a vastly under-rated virtue among our politicians. Unfortunately, many still hold on to the view that to apologise is to admit weakness.
On the contrary, apologising is essentially an effective means of resolving problems, irrespective of how complicated they look.
It is about maturity, overcoming denial and taking responsibility for your words and actions.
Such a culture is needed for the country’s new political fabric, which remains vulnerable to age-old racial and religious tensions.
For now, it's best that the issue of keris-wielding be put to rest with the apology.
As the Deputy Prime Minister has put it, everyone should take it positively and not raise it again.
Datuk Seri Najib Najib has also stressed that the keris should not be linked with the dignity of the Malays, as it is just a symbol.
Yes, this big mouth never learn from his mistakes...
